Effects of Inorganic Nitrogen Enrichment on Lake Huron Phytoplankton: An Experimental Study
نویسندگان
چکیده
Effects of inorganic nitrogen (N03) enrichment on phytoplankton were studied using a factorial design experiment. Using species assemblages from Lake Huron waters, the effects of NO] and total phosphorus (TSP) additions on species abundance and composition were monitored. The speciesnutrient relationship was determined by canonical correspondence analysis (CCA). In addition, divisional differences were related to nutrient additions using correspondence analysis (CA). These techniques were instrumental in developing species relationships to N03 and TSP gradients and, by partialling out the effect of TSP to determine the primary speciesNO] relationship. Nitrate-phosphorus (N:P) effects were also analyzed at the species and divisional levels. Gross changes in biomass, as represented by chlorophyll a concentrations, were not evident from N03 enrichment. However, species composition did change, particularly for a few species. Most evident were increases in relative abundance of Cyclotella comensis. Cyclotella stelligera, Fragilaria capucina, F. pinnata, and flagellates showed similar increased proportional abundance. Flagellates responded positively to both N03 additions and N:P interactions. Overall, there were not great changes at the level of major algal divisions. All major groups maintained their abundances relative to one another throughout the experimental period. The results from this study showed that increased NO] levels in the Great Lakes would affect species composition. INDEX WORDS: Lake Huron, phytoplankton, inorganic nitrogen.

Relationship between nutrients and phytoplankton biomass based on chlorophyll prediction model in Zribar Lake of Kurdestan, a case study
Zaribar Lake is a little shallow lake in Kurdistan province of Iran and it is faced to eutrophication. The study of phytoplankton biomass-nutrient relations is important in eutrophication management and there are many empirical models to predict phytoplankton biomass (chlorophyll a) based on nutrient (nitrogen and phosphorous) amounts in the lake. Evaluation of these empirical models and compar...

Factorial nutrient enrichment expcrimcnts were conducted with water containing natural phytoplankton assemblages collected from Grand Traverse Bay. Levels of phosphorus (phosphate) were 5, 15, 25, 40, and 60 pg P liter4 and levels of nitrogen (nitrate) were 0.23, 0.84, and 1.12 mg N liter-l. Nutrients were maintained at these levels by additions at 2or S-day intervals. Two different analyses of...
متن کاملInorganic phosphorus and nitrogen modify composition and diversity of microbial communities in water of mesotrophic lake.
The effects of inorganic nutrients (N, P) enrichment of mesotrophic lake water on changes in bacterial and protistan (heterotrophic nanoflagellates and ciliates) communities compositions were studied in the mesocosm experiment. Phosphorus (PO4(3-)) and nitrogen (NH4+) alone and in combination were added to three types of experimental mesocosms. Mesocosms results suggested that simultaneous addi...
متن کاملEffects of experimental nitrogen fertilization on planktonic metabolism and CO2 flux in a hypereutrophic hardwater lake
Hardwater lakes are common in human-dominated regions of the world and often experience pollution due to agricultural and urban effluent inputs of inorganic and organic nitrogen (N). Although these lakes are landscape hotspots for CO2 exchange and food web carbon (C) cycling, the effect of N enrichment on hardwater lake food web functioning and C cycling patterns remains unclear. Specifically, ...
متن کاملThe Effects of Ultraviolet Radiation and Nutrient Additions on Periphyton Biomass and Composition in a Sub-Alpine Lake (Castle Lake, USA)
Rising levels of ultraviolet radiation (UVR) striking the Earth’s surface have led to numerous studies assessing its inhibitory effects on phytoplankton and periphyton in aquatic systems. Mineral nutrients such as nitrogen (N) and phosphorus (P) have been shown to increase aspects of algal metabolism and compensate for UVR inhibition. An in situ substratum enrichment technique and UV shielding ...
